GSS Certified - Rigging and Lifting Training

Course Description

This 2-day rigger training course is for personnel who have had little or no training and experience in rigging and lifting operations and who want to start their journey to becoming competent rigger. The rigger course focuses on the use of mechanical lifting equipment such as chainblocks, lever hoists, tirfors and shackles, slings and wire ropes.

OPITO Approved - Rigger Initial Training (Stage 1)

A rigger uses fixed and portable lifting equipment and accessories to locate loads to a position to allow final installation or fixing or move loads to a position where they are accessible to a crane.

Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for Initial Training

Who is the Product for?

This Product is for personnel who have had little or no training and/or experience in rigging and lifting operations and wish to gain an Industry-recognised introductory certificate in rigging and lifting operations prior to undertaking further supervised workplace training.


Product Summary

To achieve the Rigger Training the learner will need to complete the 2 mandatory units

UNIT 1 The Role of the Rigger and an Introduction to Lifting Operations

  • Element 1.1 The role of the Rigger
  • Element 1.2 Introduction to lifting operations - relevant legislation and management of the hazards

UNIT 2 Rigging and Lifting Operations (Theory)

  • Element 2.1 The principles of rigging
  • Element 2.2 How to prepare a lifting operation

UNIT 3 Rigging and Lifting Operations (Practical)

  • Element 3.1 Preparation for Lifting Operations
  • Element 3.2 Carrying out lifting operations
  • Element 3.3 Restoring the work area and post-operation responsibilities


Performance Evaluation

Learners will be assessed against the outcomes specified in accordance with the assessment guidance detailed in each unit.

Assessment is a two-step process.

  • An 'written examination' with an 80% pass mark; and
  • Observation of the learner conducting a series of practical lifts.

Following successful completion of the OPITO Rigger Initial Training Programme, the learner can proceed to the workplace to work under direct supervision of a competent person- to complete the Rigger Workplace Experience Logbook. Download a copy of the log book


Careers

Learners attending the course can follow both onshore and offshore oil and gas careers with entry level roles available as Roustabouts, Riggers and Deck Hands.
